Cargo Insurance for Inventory in Transit

Manufacturer to warehouse. Warehouse to fulfillment. Fulfillment to retailer. Anywhere inventory moves, cargo coverage is what pays when something goes wrong.

What It Covers

Inventory in transit, in storage, and in handoff.

Cargo coverage is essential once your inventory starts moving between locations. 3PLs and freight forwarders typically REQUIRE you to carry your own coverage.

Pays for

  • Loss or damage during transit (truck, rail, ocean, air)
  • Theft of inventory in transit
  • Damage from accidents, weather, mishandling
  • Refrigeration failure for temperature-sensitive products
  • Loss during loading and unloading
  • Storage at warehouses, fulfillment centers, in-transit holds

Common claim scenarios

  • Container lost overboard during ocean freight
  • Truck accident with full pallet load destroyed
  • Theft from warehouse loading dock
  • Refrigeration failure on temperature-sensitive supplements
  • Damage during cross-docking between 3PLs
  • Customs detention damage on inbound shipments
Common Questions

Cargo Insurance, Plain English

Doesn't my freight forwarder cover this?
Their cargo liability is limited and structured to protect THEM, not you. Industry-standard NMFC freight rates apply trivial liability ($0.10 to $0.50 per pound). Your $50,000 pallet of supplements has $5 to $25 of liability under default freight terms. Cargo insurance is what makes you whole.
What's the difference from inventory or property insurance?
Property insurance covers your goods at YOUR location. Cargo covers goods in transit. Different triggers. Many ecom brands need both because their goods spend time both in their own warehouse AND moving between locations.
Do I need cargo if I sell mostly DTC and ship via small parcel?
Less critical for outbound DTC parcels (USPS, UPS, FedEx provide their own limited coverage). More critical for inbound ocean/air freight from manufacturers, large retail shipments, and 3PL transfers. We size cargo to where your real exposure lives.
What does cargo typically cost?
Depends on annual transit volume, product type, geographic scope, and average shipment value. Domestic-only ecom brands often start in the low thousands annually. International importers and high-value brands run higher. We size to your actual transit pattern.
