Cyber Liability Insurance for Ecom Brands
Customer data breaches, ransomware, fraudulent transactions, and the regulatory fines that follow. The exposure most ecom brands underestimate until they're filing the claim.
What It Covers
The cyber events that cost ecom brands the most.
If you handle customer payment data, email lists, or any personally identifiable information, you have cyber exposure. The cost of a breach isn't the breach itself. It's the response: notification, regulatory fines, lost customer trust, and the lawsuits that follow.
Pays for
- Breach response and forensic investigation
- Customer notification (mail, email, credit monitoring)
- Regulatory fines (state breach laws, GDPR if applicable)
- Legal defense for class action and individual lawsuits
- Business interruption while systems are down
- Ransomware response and recovery costs
- Public relations and brand rehabilitation
Triggers include
- Customer payment data theft via Shopify, Stripe, or other platforms
- Email list compromise and customer phishing
- Ransomware locking your operations or fulfillment systems
- Social engineering attacks (CEO fraud, vendor impersonation)
- Third-party vendor breach affecting your customer data
- Inadvertent data exposure (misconfigured S3 buckets, shared files)
Common Questions
Cyber Liability, Plain English
Doesn't my Shopify or my payment processor handle this?
Shopify, Stripe, and other platforms handle THEIR security. They do NOT handle your customer notification, your regulatory fines, or your defense costs when a breach is traced back to your account. You are responsible for those costs. Cyber liability is what pays them.
What limits do I need?
Sized to your customer count and revenue. Emerging brands often start at $250K to $500K. Brands with 50K+ email subscribers and active payment systems often carry $1M to $5M. We help size based on your real exposure, not arbitrary minimums.
Do I need cyber if I'm a small brand?
If you collect any customer data (and ecom brands do), yes. Breach notification laws apply regardless of company size. State AGs are enforcing aggressively. Small brands often face proportionally higher response costs because they don't have internal IT or legal teams.
What about ransomware specifically?
Ransomware is now the most common cyber claim across all small business segments. Most cyber policies include ransomware response. We confirm policy language covers BOTH the response (forensics, recovery) AND the ransom payment if your incident response plan includes that option.
What does cyber insurance typically cost?
Hundreds to low-thousands annually for emerging brands. The cost has come down as the market matured. Carriers now have better data on what makes a brand a good risk. We shop your application across our markets to find the right fit.
